چکیده

In an earlier paper [1], we found that equations based on the neutral theory of biodiversity enjoyed considerable success in predicting the relaxation times for avifaunal extinctions on isolated habitats. We suggested that the neutral theory of biodiversity might turn out to be a useful tool in conservation biology. However, Clark [2] maintains that our study ‘does not need UNTB, neither does it support it’. In addition, he argues that the ‘UNTB should not be a part of conservation planning’ although ‘simple models should always be considered’. We would like to stress that neutral theory is itself a simple model, and should not be excluded from being used simply. We agree with Clark that there is nothing in our analysis to show that ‘the species that went extinct fast were the same as those that did not’ or that ‘these species occupy the same niche or have the same fitness’. However, this is not the only logic that sets the neutral theory apart. The stochastic elements of neutral theory, which lead to the random-walk type population dynamics, are crucial to the theoretical results and applications that emerge. It is not necessary to buy into any interpretation of the niche (or the stronger claims of unification) to apply these mechanisms and get useful results that fit the data well. Of course, other models might also fit the data well, such as a model based on symmetric competition, for example. An empirical regression equation for the avifauna extinction data [1] predicts those data better than does the

Investigating the effect of pseudo-static components on bridge structures under multiple support excitations using conditional simulated records

Long-span bridges, as vital structures, play a very important role in economic development. Furthermore, the results of several earthquake-damaged bridges showed that their seismic behavior was different from that predicted under uniform excitation and in some cases the responses were more than predicted results. Therefore, the damaged bridges under non-uniform excitations were re-analyzed and ...

Discourse Structures to Reduce Discourse Incoherence in Blog Summarization

Discourse incoherence is an important and typical problem with multi-document extractive summaries. To address this issue, we have developed a schema-based summarization approach for query-based blog summaries that utilizes discourse structures. In our schema design, we tried to model discourse structures which are typically used by humans in their summary writing in response to a particular qu...

The Coherence and Incoherence among the Order of Effusion, Physics, and Ancient Astronomy from the Perspective of Muslim Philosophers

The present article deals with coherence and incoherence among the theories of the order of effusion, physics and ancient astronomy. There is no coherence between these fields in the view of Plotinus who is the innovator of the theory of effusion, while there is a coherence and correlation among these orders in Farabichr('39')s philosophy. In this regard Ibn Sina, Ikhwan al-Safa , Shaykh al-...

Would Mandating Broadband Network Neutrality Help or Hurt Competition? A Comment on the End-to-End Debate

A chorus of commentators has drawn inspiration from the ‘‘end-toend’’ argument first advanced by Saltzer, Reed, and Clark and called upon policy makers to mandate that last-mile broadband providers adhere to certain principles of network neutrality. In his contribution to this symposium, Professor Christopher Yoo offers an economic critique of these proposals. He first concludes that they are b...

Stochastic incoherence in the response of rebound bursters

At an optimal value of the noise intensity, the maximum variability in rebound burst durations is observed and referred to as a response stochastic incoherence. A general mechanism underlying this phenomenon is given, being different from those reported so far in excitable systems. It is shown to be determined by (i) the monotonous reduction of the hysteresis responsible for bursting caused by ...
